Nine Reasons You’ll Love Winter in Broken Bow

Winter is the perfect season to enjoy a Broken Bow luxury cabin. Who doesn’t dream of cuddling up in front of a fireplace on a chilly night? But there is more to this beautiful season than hoping for a snowflake and waiting for Santa. Whether you live for the experience of the outdoors or much prefer the warmth and safety of inside activities, Broken Bow has something for everyone in the most magical season of the year.

For Outdoor Enthusiasts

FLY FISHING

Beavers Bend has long been considered a fisherman’s delight - and that doesn’t change in the winter months. Catch your fill of trout at the Lower Mountain Fork River, or take advantage of the slow moving crappie at Broken Bow Lake. Brave a boat ride to fish in deeper waters, or stay onshore to keep warmer. Either way, the regularly stocked river will keep you busy for hours.  Check out Beavers Bend Fly Fishing guide Service to get your license or take advantage of the expertise and full tackle of a fishing guide. If you’re sticking to the lake, Rudy’s Guided Excursions is your go-to for a full service experience.

TRAIL RIDES

The half a million acres of trails in the Broken Bow area don’t close up shop when the temperature goes down. Bundle up and saddle up to experience breathtaking views as you ride.  Choose from trails through forests, by the riverside, or even to the Kiamichi Mountains’ foothills. Riverman Trail Rides provides options for the whole family - from buddy riding for kids under six to romantic sweetheart rides for couples.

Keep your eye out for local wildlife - you might be treated to the beauty of a bald eagle in flight. Bask in a sunset ride or stop for a picnic and warm up by a campfire. Local stables offer a variety of options ranging from one to three-hour rides. This is a great option for adults and kids.

TRAIN AND HAY RIDES

If you’d like the view without the time in the saddle, visit Beavers Bend Depot. Settle in for a fifteen minute ride through Beavers Bend State Park on a ⅓ replica of the C.P. Huntington S.P. train. This trip is perfect for families, seniors, and train enthusiasts. Veterans always ride free!

While you’re at the Depot, hop in a wagon and revel in a scenic hayride through the park. Catch a glimpse of whitetail deer on your hour long, guided excursion. Bring a blanket, some hot chocolate, and your camera for a winter’s day you won’t soon forget.

ATV TRAILS

Adrenaline junkies can get their fix all winter long by cruising through the many ATV trails north of  Broken Bow. Take advantage of the wet season to fly through the Ouachita National Forest in a powerful vehicle. Follow a map or your own intuition through miles of muddy trails and off-roading adventure. ATV experts and novices alike will be exhilarated throughout half or whole day off-roading excursions. Bring your own ATV, or rent one from one of several locations throughout the area. A word of warning - you’re going to get messy!

For the Indoorsy

SPA DAY

There is nothing more enticing about a vacation than the ability to destress. Broken Bow can soothe your frazzled nerves with more than the scenic views you dream of while you’re stuck in traffic.  Find peace and relaxation with a day at the spa. Visit Body Harmony Spa to indulge in a massage to ease muscle fatigue and anxiety. Or ease the drying effects of winter temperatures with a soothing facial.

If a day of beauty is more your style, drop by Velvet Dragon Beauty Bar for a new ‘do. Don’t miss their professional waxing and dermatological services - there is no better way to treat your skin during the harshness of winter.

ENJOY CRAFT LIBATIONS

The big cities don’t have a corner on the craft drink market. Spend some time on a cold, wet day visiting one of Broken Bow’s excellent wineries, breweries, or distilleries. Find a seasonal brew that strikes your fancy at Beavers Bend Brewery. Plan a girl’s trip to Girls Gone Wine and indulge your silly side with locally produced wines and sassy fun. Or, better yet, savor the rich flavor of Hochatown Distilling Co.’s small batch Bourbon to keep you warm.

MUSEUMS

There is no better time than a cold winter’s day to engage your mind in one of Broken Bow’s fantastic museums. Engage your mind at the Forest Heritage Center Museum in Beavers Bend State Park featuring 14 stunning dioramas that tell the story of local mountain culture from its native beginnings to modern conservation. Other displays include artifacts, artwork, and historical memorabilia.  The newest exhibit honoring the forest firefighters is a can’t-miss experience.

RELISH A NIGHT OUT

It may be chilly outside, but it’s always hot in the Hochatown Saloon. Sip an Oklahoma Sweet Tea (it’s not what you think!) and devour the Chicken Fried Steak while enjoying live music every Friday night. Don’t be shy - hop out on the dance floor and two-step the night away!  Keep an eye out for upcoming events, too. Make sure you get your tickets for the next upcoming event - you don’t want to miss this.

Abendigo’s Grill and Patio is a foodie’s dream spot. This winter, enjoy a menu designed to highlight winter flavors and seasonal ingredients. Dine inside or outside on the spacious covered patio where you can enjoy live music while indulging in Abendigo’s signature handmade lavender sour.

STAY IN

We’ve got to be honest - there is nothing like a Broken Bow luxury cabin in the winter. One of the best reasons to visit is to take advantage of the amenities right at “home”. Snuggle together with loved ones in front of your sweeping fireplace while you watch the sunset through floor-to-ceiling windows in Amethyst Moon or 1Forest1. Or, grab a friend and play some ping pong or watch a movie by the outdoor fire in Palmetto Moon.

The warmth isn’t all by the fire, either. Step out onto your private porch and hop into the hot tub to shake the chill. Warm up the whole family in Texas Kind of Way’s oversized hot tub, or have a romantic evening for two in Free At Last’s smaller version.
